Kernel Compile Problems

I have a 500au running debian testing. I have been running 2.4.20 since
last June without a problem. Recently, I realized that I didn't have
the kernel compiled the way I wanted. So I attempted to recompile it
with the same .config file as before, but with added iptables modules.

Well the compile exits with an error. I figured it was because testing
upgraded my version of gcc to 3.3.3-0pre3. So I tried to compile the
kernel with an older version 3.2.3-9. With the older version of gcc the
kernel will compile, but it hangs during boot up when it tries to access
my SCSI hard drive with timeout errors. If I look in my logs I see the
following errors:

Feb 22 18:20:20 machine kernel: depmod.modutils(14635): unaligned trap at
000000012000e868: 000000012010f6ab 2c 21

I also tried to compile the 2.4.23 kernel with gcc 3.3.3-0pre3 and it
also hangs during boot up with SCSI hard drive timeout errors.

My scsi card is a Qlogic ISP 1020 with a seagate hard drive.

I am sorry if this has been covered before.

Might I have a problem with my version of modutils?

Chris.
