Some additional data points:

1. building 2.6.1-rc1 using GCC 2.96 (yes, RH 7.2 for Alpha :-), with
the sym53c8xx_2 driver built into a GENERIC kernel, I had no trouble
running an NCR 875 on an LX164 booted from SRM

2. I did have compile-time issues, however, that were solved by removing
the "__devexit" from the sym_detach() declaration in the file

	drivers/scsi/sym53c8xx_2/sym_glue.c

So, some additional questions:

1. what compiler/binutils are you using? (my original binutils have
   been updated to binutils-2.13.90.0.16-3)

2. was the SYM_2 driver built/used as a module or built into the kernel?
(if it was a module, try it as a built-in)

Good luck.
