Tru64 labels: how to use/preserve under debian installer for 'sarge'
Hi-
I have tried several times now to install sarge on a disk that was
pre-partitioned under Tru64. If I don't start the 'a' partition at 0,
the 'manual partition' mode does not detect that the disk has partitions
that can be used, and thus does not give me the option of assigning them
to mount points. But if I *do* start the 'a' partition at 0, the
'manual partition' mode does see the partitions and I can add
them as mount points; however, Tru64 can then no longer read the label.
As a test, I labeled a disk under Tru64 with my desired partitions,
starting partition 'a' at block 4096:
# disklabel -r dsk4 | tail
8 partitions:
# size offset fstype fsize bsize cpg # ~Cyl values
a: 16384 4096 unused 0 0 # 1*- 6*
b: 2097152 20480 swap # 6*- 630*
c: 17773524 0 unused 0 0 # 0 - 5289*
d: 262144 2117632 resrvd8 # 630*- 708*
e: 8155136 2375680 resrvd8 # 707*- 3134*
f: 2097152 10534912 resrvd8 # 3135*- 3759*
g: 5141460 12632064 unused 0 0 # 3759*- 5289*
h: 0 0 unused 0 0 # 0 - 0
I then rebooted on my 'sarge' installation (whose partitions cannot be seen
from Tru64) and duplicated /boot, /, and /var over to the new disk using dump,
I then used swriteboot to put aboot on the new disk, and edited the new disk's
fstab and aboot.conf accordingly.
I was able to boot sarge off the new disk, with all the desired partitions
mounted exactly as I expected. Also, subsequent reboot under Tru64 shows
that the disklabel of the new disk is entact.
So how do I get the installer to let me specify and format partitions from
an existing label *without* messing with the label so Tru64 can't read it
anymore?
Thanks,
Toni
