Recent kernels and DMA/Interrupt problems

Hello,
Thanks to Jaska for the OSF parition tip. In hind sight its obvious
that is the partition type I needed, it just wasn't to me.

Now I have a real nasty problem.
Every kernel since 2.4.19, including 2.6.5, will not work on my alpha.
It's a PC164SX with IDE disks. 2.4.19 kernel is Debian's 2.6.5 is mine.

The symptoms are all the same. It first attempts to use DMA on the
disks, that fails then the ethernet cards go bezerk and fill the console
with messages:
(screens of the following)
Apr 24 23:47:15 fozzie kernel: eth0: Host error, FIFO diagnostic register 0000.
Apr 24 23:47:15 fozzie kernel: eth0: PCI bus error, bus status 40000020
Apr 24 23:47:15 fozzie kernel: eth0: Host error, FIFO diagnostic register 0000.
Apr 24 23:47:15 fozzie kernel: eth0: PCI bus error, bus status 40000020
(with the occasional)
Apr 24 23:47:06 fozzie kernel: eth0: Too much work in interrupt, status e003.

I cannot really see the ide messages, they get cluttered up by these
lines but I did see something about giving up on DMA and switching to
interrupts.
