Hmm, well, back when I learned to compile my own kernels (2.0.17 was my
first), "make zImage" was the thing to do on an x86 if you wanted a
compressed kernel image. Then the kernel got bigger with 2.2.x, so you
had to "make bzImage" instead. Old habits die hard, I guess.
