dhcp doesn't get running with my 2.4.20

Hi!

Finally I managed to compile 2.4.20 by using the gcc from the unstable
dist. And it runs well, except from dhcp on my eth1 device.

With the stock kernel, first the network card is identified, and then
later it is configured:

(from /var/log/messages)
Jan 26 16:01:53 octavia kernel: eth1: 3Com 3c905C Tornado at 0x9000, 00:01:02:11:82:55, IRQ 14
Jan 26 16:01:53 octavia kernel: 8K byte-wide RAM 5:3 Rx:Tx split, autoselect/Autonegotiate interface.
Jan 26 16:01:53 octavia kernel: MII transceiver found at address 24, status 782d.
Jan 26 16:01:53 octavia kernel: Enabling bus-master transmits and whole-frame receives.
Jan 26 16:01:53 octavia kernel: eth1: Initial media type Autonegotiate.
Jan 26 16:01:53 octavia kernel: eth1: MII #24 status 782d, link partner capability 41e1, setting full-duplex.
Jan 26 16:01:53 octavia kernel: eth1: Initial media type Autonegotiate.
Jan 26 16:01:53 octavia kernel: eth1: MII #24 status 7809, link partner capability 41e1, setting full-duplex.

With the 2.4.20, the module loads alright, and the first identification
part works well. But then, when it gets to the part where it probably
should look as above, I get this:

eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device

What could be the reason for this? I have dhcp support compiled in, and
other stuff. Could it be that I miss anything? Or do I have to upgrade any
packages (are the corresponding programs compatible 2.2.x <-> 2.4.x?)
