Well, you usually don't do that by hand, although zcat package.diff.gz
| patch -p1 would probably work.

dpkg-source -x package.dsc unpacks the orig.tar and patches it with
one command. And apt-get source package even downloads it
automatically :)

Actually, it (mpqc) doesn't quite build... I'm talking with the
maintainer about this currently
