Fair enough. XFS v1.1 is a patch against 2.4.18 so I'll see how I go
with that. Does anybody know if there are any problems with this on
Alphas?
I tried the 2.5.4* kernels and they seem to work quite well but
evolution doesn't work with it and my girlfriend rather likes it :-(
Also as I have not used the 2.5.* kernels much I do not know if they fix
the problem.

XFS is a journaled file system so xfs.fsck simply returns true. The
machine is swapping quite a lot so it could be related to the above URL.
I'll give 2.4.18 a bash and see how I go.
