It works fine with the 2.4.16 on Miata (Personnal Workstation au433).

Here are the sound modules that I have loaded
$> lsmod (related to sound)
sb                      9832   0 (autoclean)
sb_lib                 49982   0 (autoclean) [sb]
uart401                 8048   0 (autoclean) [sb_lib]
sound                  84784   0 (autoclean) [sb_lib uart401]
soundcore               5952   4 (autoclean) [sb_lib sound]
...

For the kernel compilation, my sound options are simply
CONFIG_SOUND=m
CONFIG_SOUND_OSS=m
CONFIG_SOUND_SB=m
