iproute and ifconfig trouble in Woody

Hello,

The setup is the following:

There is a Ruffian box with Woody installed. It contains 4 nics (one of
them being an onboard 21143 and 3 other being 3com 3c905c).

The box seems to work fine, but after installing iproute i ran into the
following problem:

mybox:~# ifconfig
: error fetching interface information: Device not found

On the other hand specifying interface works for some interfaces:

mybox:~# ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:01:02:FF:FF:FF
          inet addr:1.2.3.4 Bcast:1.2.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:11618128 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:1 frame:0
          TX packets:41781608 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:1
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          RX bytes:1057555411 (1008.5 MiB) TX bytes:59172317920 (55.1
GiB)
          Interrupt:31 Base address:0x9400

but works in a wierd way for some others:

mybox:~# ifconfig eth2
ÿÿ Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr
00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-0C-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
          IPX/Ethernet SNAP addr:[NONE SET]
          IPX/Ethernet 802.2 addr:[NONE SET]
          EtherTalk Phase 2 addr:[NONE SET]
UP BROADCAST DEBUG LOOPBACK POINTOPOINT NOTRAILERS RUNNING NOARP
PROMISC ALLMULTI SLAVE MASTER MULTICAST MTU:536870715 Metric:1
Outfill:1953460082 Keepalive:792544589
          Interrupt:255 Base address:0xff64 Memory:11fffff4f-11fffff5c DMA
chan:1f

The interface itself is up and running, but ifconfig does not seem to be
able to access it for configuration and status reading.

Reboot cures the problem.

Kernel is built from kernel-source- 2.4.18-5 that comes with woody. Nic
drivers are built as modules. The system is Ruffian. Woody is up to date.

This problem started to appear after installing iproute 20010824-8.

Has anybody else encountered the same kind of problem?
Any ideas how to fix it?

Best regards,

Juhan Ernits
