problems with samba 2.0.7

Hi,

I've been having problems with the samba package on my Ruffian running
Debian stable. Here is what happened:

The machine was being kept up to date against Woody, but I decided to go
back to Potato. This resulted in my using an older version of samba (2.0.7
as opposed to 2.0.8). Right after I downgraded, I started to get errors
like this in /var/log/smb:

[2001/12/09 13:36:41, 0] lib/util_sec.c:assert_gid(72)
Failed to set gid privileges to (-1,1001) now set to (0,0) uid=(0,0)
[2001/12/09 13:36:41, 0] lib/util.c:smb_panic(2381)
PANIC: failed to set gid

[2001/12/09 13:36:41, 0] lib/util_sec.c:assert_gid(72)
Failed to set gid privileges to (-1,1001) now set to (0,0) uid=(0,0)
[2001/12/09 13:36:41, 0] lib/util.c:smb_panic(2381)
PANIC: failed to set gid

It appears that smbd is the one causing the problems here. Group 1001 is
ssh, which is the group of the user who has read and write access to a
publicly accessible smb share.

Since then, I have tried compiling from source samba 2.0.7 and 2.2.2, both
of which result in the same errors. I'm beginning to wonder do I have a
broken /etc/group or something, because the only reference I have seen to
this problem when searching on google is when someone was having a problem
using a 2.0.x kernel with a version of samba compiled against a 2.2.x
kernel. The other reference I found to this was from Donald R. Spoon, to
this list. No one replied to his mail then, but I'm hoping maybe someone
else has come across this in the meantime.

Thanks in advance,

Steffen
