I had that too. Does the configure script run through ? You can check
for the missing .so by
ldd /usr/lib/libSDL.so
The reason on my machine was that I had sid pakets installed.
"Downgrading" to woody solved the problem. You should try the latest
*sdl1.2debian*" pakets. I can now compile SDL programmes again.
