scsi problem on multia

i'm using the stock debian alpha 2.0.35 kernel. my multia has died twice
in the last few hours. the first time, this message appeared in the
logs:

^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@nel: scsi : aborting

i rebooted, then i got this one:

Jan 9 02:22:34 slug kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout :
pid 11493, scsi0, channel 0, id 2, lun 0 Write (6) 03 28 14 02 00
Jan  9 02:22:34 slug kernel: ncr53c8xx_abort: pid=11493
serial_number=11500 serial_number_at_timeout=11500

what's going on here? is this a hardware or software problem? if it's
hardware, does it look more like the scsi controller, or the disk?
