I had the same results on a Debian system (potato) with 2.2.10 on my SX.
It would randomly segfault during kernel and egcs compiles (I have run
ALOT of larger compiles lately of egcs with random segfaults).  Reverting
back to earlier kernels worked fine, though, so I stuck with one of the
earlier ones and avoid 2.2.9/10 until things work out a bit more...
