Workaround to NIS?

I understand that NIS propagates maps over a local subnet in clear text.  What
sort of work-around is possible --- say using rdist and ssh --- to synchronize
passwd files etc?  It seems that NIS+ isn't part of the debian distribution,
otherwise I'd look there.

Is it possible to coerce useradd, usermod, newusers and friends to do this job?
