ALphaserver1000 - can't get past ABOOT or MILO

Help!  I can't get the Debian 2.1 Alpha cd installation process working past
either the "aboot" or "MILO" prompts
on my Alphaserver 1000 4/233rm.

I mounted the Debian 2.1 cdrom, and also a resc1440.bin diskette created
from 
from the cdrom dists/stable/main/disks-alpha/current/mikasa/.

When I boot from the cdrom, I get to the "aboot>" prompt, but then get "file
not found" errors for various device names:

When I boot from the resc1440 diskette, I get to a MILO prompt, but any
command such as "boot", "show" or "ls" prints a line "Please wait while
setting up devices . . . . . . . ", followed by the screen blanking for
several seconds, and then the original MILO boot lines show up again:
