NIS funkiness

As far as I can tell I'm using the same NIS setup on my i386 Slink box
as I am on my alpha Potato box (nothing in /usr/doc/nis leads me to
believe that I need to do anything different) -- based on the recipe
in /usr/doc/nis.debian.howto.gz

But it's not working on the Alpha. The daemons seem to run without
error except that I get this message in /var/log/syslog very few
minutes:

Apr 18 18:00:00 alpha ypbind[8589]: trylock = success
Apr 18 18:06:14 alpha ypbind[8814]: trylock = success

When I try "ypcat passwd" I get this:

alpha:/usr/doc/nis# ypcat passwd
YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound
No such map passwd.byname. Reason: Can't bind to server which serves this domain

Since this is my first time using NIS I can't tell if I need to tweak
my config files or if it's a bug.
