I've seen similar behavior when xdm and wdm are trying to run at the same
time.  Uninstalling xdm (dpkg -r xdm) did the trick.  It seems that the
install instructions for wdm ("uncomment no-start-wdm from
/etc/X11/config") don't do anything to turn off xdm and keep them from
fighting over the keyboard.
