linux (redhat 5+debian 2-) does not recognise MIATA network card !?!

Hi all,

I acquired a brand-new PWS500a in a "double boot" configuration (redhat 5.0
+ Windows NT). As is probably normal, it was delivered with Windows NT +
MILO on the disk and redhat in a box ... sic. Anyway, neither installation
of redhat 5.0 (using the "miata" kernel) nor of debian 2.0 (frozen) were
hard (for debian using the gatekeeper "miata-jan07" kernel), and I soon had
a running system (well, two :). I do, however, have two intriguing
problems (gory details below):

1. The network card is not responding in any way

2. Kernels later than 2.0.30 cannot see the SCSI disk partition table.

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated; as should be apparent below I
already read all applicable HOWTO/FAQ/mail archivess etc. that I could find
at gatekeeper, Chris' Alpha page (I *love* that jumpin' penguin :), and
www.redhat.com (and I have several years of un*x sysadmin experience).

Let me be specific.

ad 1. The network card is recognised ok at boot, both by the AlphaBIOS,
MILO, and the Linux kernel, and it is known alright in the devices list.

Specifically: the BIOS knows it as a "Digital 21243-PB" card; MILO and the
kernel agree admirably on using the "tulip" driver as can be seen on the
attached output from dmesg and /proc/pci below. And the kernel really
*thinks* the network is up: ifconfig happily reports that all is well
(except nothing non-local gets transmitted, of course), yet (non-local,
numeric) ping merely sends its packages into the void with no response ...

I have tried the following, without success:

* all possible x in boot arguments of the form "ether=0,0,x,eth0" proposed
by Chris in a message early this month; this does not have any effect on
  the tulip boot messages.

* recompiling the 2.0.30 kernel (with the latest gatekeeper 2.0.30 patches
applied, of course; I did not try this with the 2.0.32/3 kernels as
  should be apparent below :).

* even compiling tulip as a module and loading it with "options=x".

* connecting another (linux) computer to the same RJ-cable

The card could be defect, of course ... but my experience with Linux is
that it is more likely that someone else solved the problem in software
(and that I just need to know about it :)

ad 2. Kernels 2.0.32 and .33 somehow don't see the SCSI disk even when the
driver is loaded. The QLogic ISP 1040B is recognised ok (well, as a 1020)
at boot, just as for the 2.0.30 kernel, but then "scsi: 0 hosts" are found
and (of course) no partitions and then the infamous "VFS: Could not mount
root partition 08:xx" message (which prevents me from including a copy :).
I attached a copy of the .config file used for the 2.0.32 kernel below
(since that is the only one where the gatekeeper patch applied almost
cleanly). Are there any hidden dependencies there?

Thanks in advance,
		   Kristoffer

PS. I did send the problem to redhat (under my fast-expiring 30 days
support) but no reply there yet, either.
