NIS on Debian Alpha

Which version of the nis package are you using, your report looks like
you have the bug described in
http://www.debian.org/Bugs/db/18/18301.html
It is solved in the latest version that was uploaded some days ago.
At least for me, nis(3.2.1-2.1) now works perfectly with
libc6.1(2.0.7pre1-1).
