Partitioning HD for install

Trying to install Debian on an Alpha Personal Workstation 500a, which
had been running NT, at the "Partition Hard Disk" step-- I get, having
chosen /dev/sda, "Fatal error: Bad primary partition".

Question is:
Is this because the current primary partition (may be) is NTFS? Do I
need to make it FAT?
