Thanks for the speedy response. :)  Just for troubleshooting's sake, were
you using all of the same packages, also? 
(alpha-sources-2.0.35-0.2.tar.gz from gatekeeper, latest dpkg from
ftp.debian.org, and the www.eris.rcpt.to/libc-lchown/
libc6.1_2.0.7u-1.1_alpha.deb) ?
