Emacs20 eating CPU

Hi,

When I do META-x to enter any command in the minibuffer emacs starts
eating as much CPU time as it can, and eventually (after 2 - 3 minutes)
reads a few characters from the keyboard, and it hangs there again!

I thought it was an X problem, but it is just the same under a text console
or terminal, even worse having no mouse control on some commands.

Does anyone have any idea of what could be the problem? broken locales
support?
