alpha disks

Hi,

I think it is a good idea, they are not yet complete (particularly as
regards rescue disks, drivers disks for different architectures and
documentation), but with a README that contains the warnings below,
that should be OK. Feel free to improve it.
I have just added the base14-[1-6].bin corresponding to base2_0.tgz.

Any volunteers to generate the rescue disks and drivers disk for all
the architecture?

Maybe the main directory shoud contains root.bin,
base2_0.tgz,base14-[1-6].bin the README. Ther would be a sub-directory
for each Alpha architecture with the resc1440.bin, drv1440.bin,
.config, system.map

Regards,

Loic

README
******
Here are *experimental* Debian/alpha installation root and base disks.
At this point they will probably only be usable to people with
experience at booting Linux on Alpha, and sufficient knowledge about
MILO, ARC or SRM.

The root and base disks basically works, but the rescue disk
and drivers disks have only been tested on MIATA (PWS500a).
For other architectures, you will need to replace the milo and linux
file and the modules.tgz file om the resc1440.bin and drv1440.bin
disks with the one suited for your architecture.

You probably can use the one in the older disks-alpha directory of
Debian mirrors. Or on the ftp.digital.com site below.

It is *stronly* recommended that you join the debian-alpha mailing list and
read the recent history of the list before attemping to install Debian on an
Alpha at this time. The process is not as clean yet as it will be before
we make an official release!

The following pointers canhelp you through the process:
http://lhpca.univ-lyon1.fr/axp/debian.html (for up-to-date information
about the installation disks).
http://classnet.med.miami.edu:8080/alpha/ (Chris' Debian-Alpha Port Page)
http://www.azstarnet.com/~axplinux/milo.html (MILO HOWTO)

  kernels, milo and patches)

Summary of installation procedures:

0) prepare the floppy disks, you will need 9 floppies (or 2 floppies if
you are able to NFS mount by hand, or put the other required files on
a CDROM).
-boot floppy with resc1440.bin (cp resc1440.bin /dev/fd0)
-root floppy with root.bin (cp root.bin /dev/fd0)
If not NFS or CDROM:
-drivers floppy with drv1440.bin
-base file 1-6 with base14-[1-6].bin

1) Use the resc1440.bin disks or your own boot disk to load linux, you
must pass the following options to the kernel process:
 rw ramdisk_size=4096 load_ramdisk=1 promt_ramdisk=1
(It is important not to forget the rw, by default the kernel mount the
ramdisk read-only and it will not work)

2) At prompt for root disk, insert the floppy with root.bin

3) follow the installation procedure which is similar to Linux/i386
If you have the base files available by NFS, you can configure network
and mount the volume using the second virtual console, and use the
"mounted directory" choice when asked for the files.
