MILO can be used with SRM as well, just like aboot (and then must be
written onto the very beginning of the disk).

PALcode has to be platform dependent anyway.  What the kernel could do is
detect the system type and adjust itself accordingly on startup, and, if
I remember correctly, there was a patch for that written by Richard
Henderson.  I don't know why it is not incorporated; may be, it's still
under development or Richard has dropped it.
