Backtrack. I don't have espeakup installed either, but what I do have
installed and you do not have installed is speechd-up.
espeakup is a connector between speakup kernel modules and espeak.
Purge espeakup if you've installed it, and install speechd-up.
speechd-up is Interface between Speech Dispatcher and SpeakUp.
You have speech-dispatcher installed all you need is to install speechd-up.
I get confused between speechd-up and espeakup. Two different systems.
