or just place the iso file in /home
That part would make it much harder for the installer to find the iso
image. Putting it onto a partition is really much simpler.
I kind of wanted a non-distructive method for the iso image
I don't understand what would be "distructive" in just dd-ing the
CD to the partition? That'd on the contrary make it completely
independent from the system, since on a separate partition.
