Hi, I don't know what to replace export ALSA_CARD=0 with in

Oops, sorry.

I guess you should check that your speakers are being recognised at all first,

Try this:

cat /proc/asound/cards

This should show youall the sound devices that ALSA knows about. Mine looks like this:

 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfe9dc000 irq 44
 1 [CA0106 ]: CA0106 - CA0106
                      Live! 7.1 24bit [SB0410] at 0xdce0 irq 18

If you don't se your speakers, make sure that snd-usb-audio doesn't appear in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base-blacklist.conf and maybe try connecting the speakers and seeing what shows up in syslog if anything.

If you already know that your speakers work, you can ignore most of this. /proc/asound/cards should tell you what to put in /etc/default/espeakup.

HTH,
Geoff.
