As a data point, NetBSD on the sun2 (68010) uses the larger alignment just like there rest of the NetBSD m68k platforms and the typical memory config for those things is 4MB.  ColdFire is not my jam (too new :-), so I’m not really that familiar with the memory configs on those platforms.
