Hmm, odd. I did't use a custom kernel but the kernel that is part of
the debian-installer tarball here:

That was 4.9.x and I'm pretty sure it worked without the quirk. But
maybe it simply didn't load that particular module in d-i (yet).

If it's not in upstream yet, we should kindly ask the maintainer of
the Debian package to include the patch :).
