Hmm, I was pretty sure I was testing on Aranym because of the remaining multi-threading
issues we have on qemu and even on Aranym openjdk-8 was locking up, but I will give it
another try.

Would you mind sharing a tarball of your compiled openjdk-8 binaries? That would help
bootstrapping openjdk-8 for Debian/m68k.
