2003 MacOS MacSSH, that'd be ssh2 but the linux sshd seems to be ssh1.
is there a linux ssh2?

I followed the man hosts instructions that the entries s/b

address cannonical alias(es?).

since your /etc/hosts works for you,
probably having the address first is the only important
thing.
