No! You can't really skip it. I had this same problem with the freeze when I
was trying to install potato on my Quadra 610. You need to update your
kernel. You can go to the sourceforge project page at
http://linux-mac68k.sourceforge.net/ to get updated kernels, and other
stuff.... Remember, kernels can be independent of the debian version you are
using.
