XFree86 Working on Performa
Hi all. Recently I was working on my Performa to try and get XFree86 up
and running. I was unable to for quite some time, and I believe part of
this to be because I was unable to find a 'sample' XFree86 config file
on the mailing list, or anywhere on the internet (for m68k that is,
plenty for other platforms).
So, here is documentation on my workings with XFree86, hopefully someone
will find this useful in a similar bind.
Attached at the end of this letter after some information about my
system are copies of two files:
/etc/X11/XF86Config <--basic config file
/etc/X11/Xmodmap <--Gets the delete key mapped to backspace. Its hard
using a computer without it, trust me :)
When I was starting x with the default config file, I was getting the
following errors:
(**) FBDev: Using XF86Config video mode database
Fatal server error:
No valid modes found.
or:
(**) FBDev: Using default frame buffer video mode
Fatal server error:
fbdevScreenInit: unable to set screen params (Invalid argument)
The fix is easy, but I cannot explain some of the error messages :)
Basically, as I understand it, FBDev cannot change the resolution of the
framebuffers on these computers. So, you must have already set this
*before* booting into debian (set it in the mac os). But, it goes a step
deeper - you must also have set the *color* depth as well.
If, for example, color in the Mac OS is set at 'thousands' yet your
DefaultColorDepth is set to '8' in /etc/X11/XF86Config, you will get the
error "unable to set screen params".
Also, if you attempt to define a resolution (such as: Modes "640x480")
you will also fail to start x with the following error: "No valid modes
found.".
So here's what you do:
1) Figure out what color depth you're running, and change it, if
necessary, in the Mac OS.
2) Set the DefaultColorDepth to the correct value - 8 for 256 colors,
and 16 for thousands (and 4 for 16 colors, etc)
3) Set the Modes value in the display to be used to "default" (*with*
the quotes).
Numbers 2 and 3 are in the Section "Screen". Number 3 is in whatever
SubSection "Display" you are using - the value of DefaultColorDepth will
determine which entry is used.
Now, for the backspace key :-) This is very important, as I find it
nearly impossible to have an intelligent conversation in xchat without
it :-D
Edit the file /etc/X11/Xmodmap
Uncomment, assuming you are using a standard macintosh keyboard the
following:
! Macintosh (ADB) keyboard
keycode 59 = BackSpace
keycode 125 = Delete
(A line is 'uncommented' in this format when the "!" is removed from the
beginning of the line. So in my example, only the "keycode 59" and
"keycode 125" lines have been uncommented. This is how your file should
be too).
Now some information about my machine, so you can judge the relevance of
my comments to your situation:
The machine is an Apple Macintosh Performa 636 running Debian Linux
2.2.20.
The CPU has been replaced with the CPU from a Macintosh Centris (to rid
myself of the 68LC040 bug, and to get a real FPU).
Here is what the kernel says about my video:

macfb does not support changing the video mode
Before I forget, I don't think there is support for console mouse in
debian m68k linux. But I could be wrong :) if the kernel says it picked
up your ADB mouse, you're probably fine, don't worry if it doesn't show
up in the console as it does on many other unix and unix-like OS's.
Ok thats about it, here are the files, as promised:
