XFree86-4.1 keyboard problems

After having some issues with 3.6, I thought I'd try XFree86 4.1 now that 
it shows up in the apt listings. Installation went fine, configging when 
fine, but when I load it the keyboard acts all screwy. It does the same 
thing with macintosh and pc104 as the keyboard type. Here's the keyboard 
section of my XFree86-4:

Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier   "Generic Keyboard"
	Driver       "keyboard"
	Option      "CoreKeyboard"
	Option      "XkbRules"   "xfree86"
	Option      "XkbModel"    "macintosh"
	Option      "XkbLayout"    "us"

Near as I can tell, it matches the ones I've found on the web.

Any ideas?
