FTP and Telnet problems

Up until yesterday, I was happily running a Quadra 650 with Apache, FTP, 
and telnet services. Suddenly, I no longer have telnet or FTP capability. I 
tried apt-get remove and then apt-get install for both ftpd and telnetd. 
This did not work.

Anyone have any idea what happened and how I can fix it?
