PEX X font errors on SE/30...(was: Xserver/Xwindows on SE/30)
I'm baaaaack.
I've gone through the painstaking process of installing the following
on my se/30 in efforts to get X to work.
xserver-fbdev
xserver-common
xfree86-common
xlib6g
zlib1g
xfonts-base
xfonts-100dpi
xfonts-75dpi
xext
xbase-clients
and...
When I run startx, I get the gray stichwork which xsetroot puts up,
but after that, I got a crash ...
PEXExtentionInit: Couldn't open default PEX font file Roman_M
Waiting for X server to shut down...
...
so thats when I installed the pex fonts (xfonts-pex) -- still crash
so i added the PEX folder to the paths set in the XF86Config file...
And so it yells that there is no font.dir file in the PEX directory.
It says that I need to do a mkfontdir. Fair enough, I see one in
every other font directory.
Mkfontdir does nothing. It doesn't make a font.dir file. No output. Nothing :(
But, the PEX font directory has 2 files, Roman.phont, and
Roman_M.phont. All the other directories have *.pcf.gz files. I tried
renaming the files to *.pcf.gz, but mkfontdir wouldn't take em.
Damn.
And here I stand, tempted by the gray screen and the Xcursor, but no
wm to load. ugh! Theres some issue here with .phont files or
something. Or perhaps I could change the default font for the
PEXExtentionInit? hmm?
I have searched the faq's.
I have searched debian.
I have searched google.
I have searched Xfree.
Someone, help!

NOTE: When all this is done, I'm thinking about writing a howto on
installing X to systems that don't have it...err something. I know I
found it a bit rough around the edges with all the dependecies and
this font issue. Is there a need? If so, I'd be honored.
