that means your default runlevel is 5.  you can fix this many ways.  One
is to set it to single user mode in penguin which should not start xdm.
once you are in single user mode edit the file /etc/inittab(i think)  and
change the line that says:

id:3:initdefault:
to 
id:5:initdefault:

if you are already started up try pressing ctrl-alt-F2 to get to a console
and then edit /etc/inittab from there
