Mac SE/30 -- "Error writing /target/etc/fstab"

I have a Macintosh SE/30 that I once successfully installed Slink on,
but I am unable to reproduce that success currently. I had planned on
taking this machine to Debian's booth at the Atlanta Linux Showcase,
so my time is beginning to run short.

During the 'Configure the base system' part of dbootstrap, I get an
error writing /target/etc/fstab. But /target appears to be mounted
read-write, as I can muck around with /etc/timezone and touch fstab.

I saw there was a similar message posted in August, but I'm either
blind or part of the thread is missing from the /Lists-Archives/ area
at www.debian.org; if anyone can help me out here, I'd greatly
appreciate it.

Alternatively, what does the 'Configure the base system' part do,
other than set a timezone? I wouldn't mind doing all that stuff by
hand if it means I have a Debian-running Mac by Wednesday/Thursday.
