I believe what I said was 'install a new (=bigger) hard disk.'. Getting
MacOS onto that either requires a floppy drive, or another Mac.

That's been answered: you can download System 7.5.x from Apple's FTP site
for free.

Sure, but without MacOS you can't do anything. Linux boots from a MacOS
booter, and that's not going to change.

LC040. The question is: will FPU emulation work with that one? Motorola
shipped a series of LC040 with broken Line-F trap mechanism.

Wrong. e2fsck is really using FPU instructions. But init will silenty die
anyway before starting that if your LC040 doesn't have a functional Line-F
trap.

It does. And hfsutils can be used without need for kernel HFS support.

You need mac-fdisk compiled for ix86. I'm not sure this package is
availabe. It's on otherosfs if it exists (get the source and build it
yourself if necessary).

No. Even unpacking the base system tar to the target drive won't work.
Copy the install files to the MacOS partition and install from that one.
You need MacOS anyway, remember?

There have been problems using at least one sort of Apple CD300 drives
under Linux. But other drives might not be supported for MacOS
installation. Bug Apple.
