dinstall stuffed?

After getting a suggestion from Martin Mitchell to try and manually
install everything after manually mke2fs and mkswaping the appropriate
partitons.

I mounted /dev/sda1 on /target and turned the swap partition on.

Went to install the kernel (also tried install base system), and get an
error saying that there is no root filesystem mounted.

Anyone have any suggestions, manual install without dinstall?
