It'd allow you to receive donations, presumably tax-free, but companies won't be making those. The problems we've had for DC15 going with a NPO is that we're very limited on the way we're allowed to spend money. For instance, a conference dinner for conference attendees is not really considered to be "in public interest" (while the conference is), and so we're forced to jump through hoops. > > - DC16(Pty)Ltd will register for VAT, and pay 14% VAT on all > > sponsorships it receives from local companies. > > And fees from local attendees choosing to pay a fee (attendance is > free). International attendees would probably pay SPI/FFIS for > their accommadation/fees. Depends on how we organise it and where we want the money. Going via SPI/FFIS means your dependent on their reporting to know who paid, which is not real-time at best. Also, check whether such fees incur VAT. In Germany, conference fees are VAT exempt if they are primarily used to cover the expenses of the conference. > I think UCT's accom would be VAT free, as they're an exempt > educational institution, and non-holiday accommodation is VAT > exempt. See my other message: in this case, we won't be claiming any VAT against those expenses and it'll be even more important that (a) we charge VAT onwards to sponsors, and (b) research alternative means. -- .''`. martin f. krafft <madduck@d.o> @martinkrafft : :' : proud Debian developer `. `'` http://people.debian.org/~madduck `- Debian - when you have better things to do than fixing systems "no woman should ever be quite accurate about her age. it looks so calculating." -- oscar wilde
