Just to clarify the problem further to anyone who didn't know about it
-- displaying the save button is also linked to giving a warning when
the user tries to navigate away from the page. If the user makes
changes which don't currently trigger the save button (editing only
text fields, without ticking/unticking items), no warning will be
given about unsaved data when the page is closed.
