Re: on being covid positive and still being inside the venue and in talk rooms
Hi Holger,
As I'm very likely to be among the 4 you counted I would like to tell
here my side of the story:
- between yesterday evening and this afternoon when my ears buzzed
enough that I had to ask explicitly for confirmation on some
organization channel (and was then very rudely told to stay in my room,
expletive removed) nobody told me I was expected not to show up in the
venue; I also actually asked a team member yesterday that should
definitely have known about this (and I won't name names) and we agreed
that being careful and strictly adhering to barrier gestures (face mask,
distantiation, avoiding unnecessary interactions etc) would be fine
- before that, I took some time to call an emergency (as in ER) doctor,
discuss the situation (conference etc) with them and ask for
recommendations. They told me very clearly that the full isolation
policy is outdated but that I should follow the barrier gestures and be
extra cautious at meal time and around vulnerable people; so it's not
just legal, it's current public health policy from a source that can be
trusted and is usually rather cautious
- I tried to maintain some social distancing at meal time by showing up
late and eating outside but that didn't work out great at lunch time so
later we agreed with peb on signal that I would not do that anymore and
use the services of the covid lunch heroes (I wanted to avoid them a
trip all the way down to my room)
- I can understand it if DebConf has other (than strictly medical)
reasons to keep applying a strict COVID isolation policy but then that
should have been stated somewhere. I might have behaved differently
then.
- I think that some reactions are excessive, but I won't further discuss
this right now, things need to cool down a bit first.
Anyway, from now on I'm going to remain out of the venue until there is
some clear agreement with the orga team that I can come back.
