Thanks, Enrico! Since I depart from further away than a one-day train journey, I am chasing routes involving at least one night train (but didn't mention - sorry!). Night trains are more expensive, and slower than many trains by day, but likely cheaper than alternative accomodation (except obviously couchsurfing). I just learned that several night trains are operated within Italy, including one between Bologna and Bari.
