On Grassmarket, the street you get on if you go past the Budget Backpacker and further down, there's a lot of nice eating places. The pizza place is good, as the Italian one (but a bit expensive. The pubs are as all other pubs, ok food for not too much money.

If you want to walk a bit there's Wetherspoon's on Georges street (over the bridge, second paralell street to Princes St.).

Alternatively, do what I did for lunch today: avoid the canteen entirely
and go to the mosque which is nearby. I paid £3-ish for slightly more
food there.
