Configuring X in the laptops provided by the organization

Hello people,

to those of use that don't own a laptop, or didn't bring one to
DebConf, the organization provided us with one. They are Toshibas, and
I'm having serious trouble to get X working in !vesa !640x480 mode. If
somebody who got one of these laptops has managed to do it, or
somebody is willing to give it I try, I'd be delighted.

The graphic cards seems to be:

0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Trident Microsystems CyberBlade XP4m32 (rev 91) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems: Unknown device 0001
Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B-
	Status: Cap+ 66MHz+ UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR-
	Latency: 8
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 11
	Region 0: Memory at f0000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128M]
	Region 1: Memory at efc00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M]
	Region 2: Memory at e0000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128M]
	Region 3: Memory at dfff8000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=32K]
	Capabilities: [80] AGP version 2.0
		Status: RQ=33 Iso- ArqSz=0 Cal=0 SBA+ ITACoh- GART64- HTrans- 64bit- FW- AGP3- Rate=x1,x2,x4
		Command: RQ=1 ArqSz=0 Cal=0 SBA- AGP- GART64- 64bit- FW- Rate=<none>
Capabilities: [90] Power Management version 2
		Flags: PMEClk- DSI+ D1+ D2+ AuxCurrent=0mA PME(D0-,D1-,D2-,D3hot-,D3cold-)
		Status: D0 PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=0 PME-

The "trident" driver from the X11 shipped in Sarge does not recognize
the card at all. I've upgraded to X.org (the backport from gravity's
packages made by nobse) and I seem to get higher resolutions, but then
only in a part of the screen (there's like a thick black margin
  surrounding the useable area).

  Any help/tips appreciated, thanks.
