On February 27, 2010, the DebConf committee decided that DebConf11, the Debian developer conference of 2011, will take place in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This will be the first time DebConf takes place in Eastern Europe. The exact dates have yet to be determined. More details may be found on the organisers' wiki: http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf11 In a three-and-a-half hour marathon meeting on Saturday evening, the Banja Luka bid narrowly won over bids from Quito and Munich. Teams had been preparing their bids since mid-2009, seeking venues and local sponsors in their respective cities and countries. DebConf organiser Jimmy Kaplowitz describes the challenge of the meeting: "Deciding between these three excellent bids was very difficult. The Quito team did great work identifying suitable infrastructure that I hope to see made available to many future conferences. The depth of Debian and free software experience in Germany produced a well-supported and solid bid." "Forced to pick one location, the team chose to bring DebConf to a new region, whose local community members worked extremely hard addressing many financial and logistical issues. We hope this will be only the first of many collaborations between Debian and the Bosnian community." The DebConf team is pleased to have the strong support of the city of Banja Luka and Government of Republika Srpska in making this bid possible. Their support, combined with many other local sponsors, made hosting DebConf11 in Banja Luka a very attractive prospect. "It is with great honor and privilege that Bosnia and Herzegovina and the town of Banja Luka welcome this event," said Safir Secerovic of the Banja Luka team. "The news of Banja Luka being chosen to host DebConf11 has already echoed throughout the former region of Yugoslavia, and technical people from the region are looking forward to coming and getting acquainted with the Debian Community. The same is true for the Balkans as a whole. People involved in Debian and Free Software from all over Eastern Europe warmly welcome and anticipate such an event in their backyard." The DebConf organisers congratulate the future organisers of DebConf11, and thank all three teams for their efforts. The venue decision for DebConf12 will be made in twelve months. Proposals should be submitted by 31 December 2010 to be eligible for consideration. About DebConf ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DebConf is the Debian Project's developer conference.
