Yes, but so far only when continuing from the first.  Like I
said, it successfully appends sessions to this medium later,
which writes to the second layer.

Yes, exactly my findings.

Well, it'll enable defect management, whatever that really does.

The drive can do both with and without defect management; my
idea of removing the option and using defect management is based
on the suspicion that the failing block is indeed problematic on
the media, and can thus be worked around.  If so, it'll be the
first time ever -- I've never yet seen defect management remap
anything, that's why I switch it off normally.

This medium is not LTH, but the usual HTL.

I also have an older GGW-H20N (same as GGW-H20L, just without
LightScribe).  Its demise began the same way: bad writes after
about 1--1.5 years, on certain media first, then on most.  It's
still reading fine and fast, though, and its DVD/CD writing is
also OK, that's why I still use it.
