Well, the next test would be to blank it
and to retry writing.
I'd propose a full lengthy blank.
E.g.:
  cdrskin -v dev=/dev/cdrom blank=all image.iso

This would then become a SAO write run.
Alternatively you could add option -tao or
keep cdrskin from learning the input size:
  cat image.iso | cdrskin -v dev=/dev/cdrom blank=all -

xorriso would do such runs in its cdrecord
personality:
  xorriso -as cdrecord -v dev=/dev/cdrom blank=all image.iso
